Hi - I'm trying to find a place for my fam to go for my sister's 25th birthday. Everyone in my fam likes something different causing difficulty in finding a place. We'd prefer a restaurant with entrees in the 20's def some chicken or pasta on the menu and preferably not a steakhouse or italian restaurant (unless it's a tuscan-type place). We really like Portofino Grille. I Coppi. Maya. Thalia. Scarlatto. Avra. Mesa Grill and Stanton Social to name a few. However my brother doesn't eat steak or fish so I am trying to find a nice restaurant with ambiance not too stuffy but a menu that is delicious but not as sophisticated or limited as cookshop hearth gramercy tavern (we'd love to go there - looks fabulous!) Any location is fine - other than financial district. Will be driving so prefer easy access from FDR or West Side Hwy. Crispo does look good. Especially love the garden aspect! Any more suggestions? Asian Fusion or Contemporary American? Or anything else you may know of? Orchard Street came recommended and looks good but doesn't have chicken on menu for my bro... I Trulli also looks good but the menu is still bit too eclectic for my fam. Looks adorable!Fresco by Scotto looks fabulous! You might also check out Chow Bar. Sort of pan-Asian as interpreted by an American chef. There should be enough different types of dishes to please everyone. Giorgio's of Gramercy has the type of menu you are looking for i e.. New American cuisine with an Italian bent so something for everyone. The food is well-prepared but not overly sophisticated. Pleasant service and very lovely ambiance. I too think Crispo fills the bill -- something for everyone. However if you must have another suggestion that is a generic place try Compass which is reasonable enough and will cater to certain tastes. Another for Crispo with one caveat the noise (see recent thread regarding atmosphere). There are a lot of Crispo fans on this board. I thought it was a great value and good food. I'm not as in love as other hounds. You mentioned you really liked I Coppi (Crispo is larger and louder with better food and service). I also like RGR's suggestion for Giorgio's. I like Compass but I think Chef Neil Annis's cuisine is probably too sophisticated for wolverinegal's family. Of course she can judge for herself by looking at the menu on their website. Though I've considered trying Crispo reports about the high noise level -- one of my major restaurant peeves! -- have made me less inclined to do so. Hi RGR:Actually the noise level at Crispo is not to the point that you are reading lips like at some restaurants but certainly during the week you can count on it being more tame in that regard -- well worth a try for really creative Italian dishes and warm pleasant service persons. As for Compass. I tend to think of it as much more generic than you do. I guess. I took my family teenage kids included and old aunt and uncle and there seemed to be something for everyone without being challenging. However. I must say that it was in May before the chefs changed hands so maybe it is more of a challenge now. I feel the same way about noise but even though Crispo can be loud at times it's never so bad that you can't hear yourself talk. The delicious food makes up for a lot. I've found Sunday night to be the quietest. I agree about Compass as OP says she doesn't want something too sophisticated. Hi - Thanks everyone!Well. I am looking into Giorgio's and Compass as we speak. I bounced Crispo and Perilla off my sister last night and she was excited about Perilla. Any more restaurants to suggest semi-similar to Perilla?Or. I thought Jane might be good too - anything similar to that to recommend? She's tough - doesn't want Italian and wants something "special" and yet not too sophisticated! Though I've not been to Perilla all the reports I've read about it on this and other food forums have been very positive. Seems to me since your sister is the birthday celebrant if she's excited to go there and you can get a reservation that's where you should go. Best birthday wishes to your sister and Bon Appetit! RGR we are on the same page regarding noise. We went to Crispo (me for the first time) on a Friday night at 7 PM and were in the main dining room. Noise level was okay and we were not in the bar area (noisier) or garden (quieter). You should give it a try but NOT on a weekend. The food was good and a great value. Thanks fdr! I'm now more inclined to give Crispo a try. We can certainly do it mid-week but I wonder if a Sunday might also be quieter? I don't know why I didn't think of this before. Punch is delicious without being too sophisticated (the chef once worked at Compass). The menu is varied and very reasonably priced. Atmosphere is beautiful and service always warm and professional. It can get a little noisy at times but the seating is very comfortable and tables fairly well-spaced. It's a gem that deserves more recognition. I think you would have a great time there and everyone would find a dish that they will like.

"Taste Buds in Sunnyvale" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-20 18:34:11

Does Sunnyvale need another Indian restaurant? Well yes actually. Taste Buds fills the gap for a good mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes cooked well and inexpensively. Most of the business is takeout but there are 6 or 8 tables available for eating in too. I've had good luck so far with the mutton biryani and chana masala. It's on Grape Ave off of El Camino opposite Lozano's car wash. It's not a destination place but a great addition to the neighborhood. Michael. I'm tracking with you. I stopped by Taste Buds on Friday for a late dinner on my way back to the City. This is a sweet little displace. No kidding that it does a lot of take-out business big trays too which made my seat by the door too cold and drafty. But it was nice to have table service tasty food and such low prices. From the tableware and the Chinese good luck ornament still on the wall. I guess it was a Chinese restaurant before. For an appetizer. I tried the cut mirchi. These were made with a long skinny fresh green chili with medium alter. These were somewhat oilier than the ones at Tabla Flavors. The breading was interesting. The inner layer was tender and crumbly then the outer coating had a hard crackly crunch to it. The wonders of double-frying! These were dusted with cumin salt and served with color mint chutney a cut of red onion and a wedge of lemon. The chutney was good though I would have preferred a South Indian style coconut chutney with this dish. Combining a bit of the red onion with the cut mirchi was magical. Shows how spicy this is that the sweetness of something like a raw onion would have a moderating effect! I wasn't really in the mood for biryani but since it was available this night (only Wed. Fri. Sat & Sun). I figured I need to jump on the opportunity. Also. I had asked the server where the cooks were from and when he said Hyderabad then biryani became a must. The call is much softer with more melded flavors from the steamy dum cooking unlike the version at Hyderabad accommodate in Palo Alto. The chunks of boneless bear were very tender and comfort succulent. The well-seasoned rice had the occasional suprise grip of hot green chilis and those who dislike whole spices in their food ordain need to speak with warn. This was accompanied by a thinnish salan (curry act) and some cooling raita. The raita was fresh as can be with just-cut veggies and a kick from bits of fresh green chilis. The serving size is pretty large and I took half of it with me. I was offered.

"Ultimate Buds Apple-Etymotic ER-6i iPhone Earphones" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-11 20:30:49

I'm pleased to report that I am no longer the odd man out at TUAW. That's right. I finally got around to buying an iPhone. Overall my iPhone experience has been fairly good but I've been spoiled in the earphone department. Some might denote that I with iLounge's Jeremy Horwitz I asked him the challenge that he gets asked over and over again: what are the beat headphones for the money? He quickly replied (which bring about me to the president of Etymotic later at the show). I took Jeremy's discuss and cut in like with the clear sound that the ER6i's produced. What does this undergo to do with the iPhone? The iPhone comes with a unify of very cool headphones that have a built in remote for the iPod functionality as well as a built in microphone so you can converse on the telecommunicate and listen to music with the same headphones. Brilliant and one of the best features of the iPhone. Sadly after using the ER6i's for months the Apple headphones just aren't up to snuff. That's why I was delighted to read about the. Ultimate Buds has combined the best of both worlds the remote/microphone of Apple's supplied headphones and the stellar sound of the ER6i's (the affiliate actually splices a pair of ER6i earbuds to the Apple headphones). This brilliant little contraption ordain set you approve $145.99. $119.99 if you give the Apple headphones to them or $40 if you send them both ER6i's and Apple headphones. I'll be ordering a set for myself until Etymotic comes out with a solution themselves and you can evaluate a analyse as soon as I get my ears on a set.[via ] 1. Interesting. Seems cheaper than usual for Etymotic. Anyways. Seems desire they are selling us modified Apple earbuds aka use Apple earbuds cut off the earbuds fasten Etymotic earbuds on. After all for the most move its really the only part that makes a difference. Hence the Apple iPhone earbud reject. 2. After about a week of investigate I settled on ER6i for my iPod a bring together of months ago and I undergo to say these are hands drink the beat headphones ever. They discriminate sound perfectly for noisy roommates or subway/instruct/cut trips and the equalizer is so good that you'll hear things you probably didn't hear with generic headphones. I highly recommend them. Combining them with a mic is ameliorate for the iPhone.. just alter sure you don't get hit by a transport or something since they really discriminate go come up. 3. The only problem I see with this that populate who already talk on their phones too loudly will be even louder since they won't be able to comprehend themselves. 4 hmm.. interesting idea. I like my headphones (i undergo a collection of about 15 pairs for various applications) but i wonder if the cables that are being spliced onto the earbuds will degrade the sound quality (oxygen-free and all that) or if there could be a problem with the proper be of power being supplied to the actual drivers themselves not sure i'd buy these "splice jobs" but i desire the idea and the direction.. hopefully it'll lead to more premium options for the iphone (without the use of a gaudy adapter). 5. This sounds desire a great idea but something is really wrong with the Apple earbud wiring or something. This is my back up pair that eventually has little to no appear coming out of the left (non-mic) side of the earbuds while the right side puts out a normal be of appear. I walked into the Apple hold on and they gave me a remove replacement but I'm wondering why this has happened again!I haven't been abusing the iPhone's earbuds. In fact. I've been taking good compassionate of them. I've just been using them normally. Maybe the regular iPod earbuds can't take this much normal usage without breaking down? I don't know.. this is the first measure I've ever used the Apple earbuds this much. 6. @Alexander:I had the same thing happen to me with my earbuds except that it didn't have anything to do with wear-and-tear on them. The first measure I used them out of the box I noticed that sound out of the left bud was spotty and traced it back to dodgy connection seating: if I rotated the jack around in the socket I could get sound every few moments but never consistently. I went to the Apple Store and showed them the problem - they verified it and gave me a new pair on the spot. No problems since.@Scott - re: your iPhone purchase:accept home. We're glad you're finally here :D 7. @Chase > "i wonder if the cables that are being spliced onto the earbuds ordain abase the sound quality (oxygen-free and all that)"express joy. Myth. bunco form: "electrically speaking. OFC wire is indistinguishable in audio and video applications from ordinary annealed copper equip."But you know if you undergo the $$$. I'll deliver some electron enhanced wire which transmits the signal faster than the speed of light so abstain you'll be hearing the music before you knew you even wanted to. I label it Hawking Cable. Nothing tests the laws of physics more than audiophile BS. 8. I prefer shure's iPhone adapter with the built-in mic since you can use it with any set of headphones. They have a pretty good mic made to hang at your chest and you don't have the issue with the iPhone buds of the mic twirling around because the cord's so thin you can't tell how much it's twisted. The only air with them is that with most headphones you end up with a whole lot of cord. It's no problem though with the new line of Shures (desire my E500s) since they are made with very short cords and come with a set of extention cords. But you can use traditional-length cords as desire as you don't mind a lot of extra equip hanging around. 9. Annoys me that I had just sold my 6i's and replaced them with 4p's alter before the iPhones launched. Pain in the butt to undergo to get a unify of 6i's again just for this. 10. You could try doing it yourself... Different buds of cover. But it's the same idea. Alas my hands shake too much for such small bring home the bacon. Oh and I don't undergo any ER-6i's. Or an iPhone (Yay Canada). So I guess I'm out. 11. Since I haven't seen any comments from owners. I thought I'd furnish my 2-cents. I bought a unify of Ultimate Buds a few weeks ago and I love them. They appear as good as my old ER6's (and without the cable microphonics) and the clicker works great as you'd evaluate. There isn't any audio feedback and these do isolate sound but I've gotten used to communicate regularly and believe that it all works. In terms of sound and fit. I do desire my Future Sonics more than the Etymotics but these are definitely a massive improvement over the fail iPod bugs on both counts. Also so far they've taken the stuffed-in-my-pocket treatment OK.(Micah. I thought these were cheap too since I remembered my ER6s costing more than what the Ultimate Buds were selling for but it looks desire the ER6s are retailing for about $75 these days and w/ design improvements which is a nice surprise.) 12. I had a pair of these but sold them on eBay. Yes they isolate come up and appear great.. when you can get them to fit correctly. And if you wear them when walking or running every footfall thunders through your head desire a big bass go. And if you get sweaty while running they slip out. A lot of hype in this TUAW advertisement of yours. 13. I accept with Martin. I've tried the ER-6is and they're really nothing special. Even when you can get them in far enough to (presumably) do what they're supposed to do. And when you can get them in far enough to alter them seem like you have ANY bass set up on your iPod at all they are so uncomfortably painful that you have to (try to) look for them out or.
